سَنَة · عَامYearTendency, with exceptionsTime and nature
The tendency is that «sanah» is used for years of hardship and toil, and «ʿām» for a year of ease and relief.
Nuh stayed among his people «alfa sanatin illā khamsīna ʿāmā»: the long years of toilsome preaching are sanah, the remaining fifty (apparently after the flood) ʿām. In Yusuf’s interpretation the seven years of famine are «sinīn» and the year of rain is «ʿām».

We (once) sent Noah to his people, and he tarried among them a thousand years less fifty: but the Deluge overwhelmed them while they (persisted in) sin

Then will come after that (period) a year in which the people will have abundant water, and in which they will press (wine and oil)

أَنزَلَ · نَزَّلَSending downDebatedWorship and speech
According to many scholars «nazzala» (form II) means sending down gradually and «anzala» all at once: the Qur’an came in parts over 23 years, the Torah and Gospel whole.
This distinction is debated because the usage in the Qur’an is not consistent everywhere.
Qur’anic examples (1)
3:3 Aal ImranBoth in one ayah
It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong)

If Allah had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. «nisyān» is forgetting something known; «sahw» is heedlessness despite knowing. 107:5 says «ʿan ṣalātihim», not «fī ṣalātihim»: the blame is for neglecting the prayer, not for a slip within it.

In Surah Al-Kahf the same town has two names: «qaryah» when food is refused (18:77), and «al-madīnah» when the wall is explained (18:82). Some commentators read this as reflecting the people’s character in the first scene; others treat the two words as synonyms.
