The 29 surahs that open with letters such as Alif Lām Mīm, Ḥā Mīm, Ṭā Sīn Mīm: the ayaat that follow each, and how they connect
Twenty-nine surahs open with letters that are recited one by one: «الٓمٓ» is read “Alif Lām Mīm”. Scholars hold several views on their meaning, but one pattern is clear: in 25 of the 29 surahs the letters are followed immediately (within the first three ayaat) by mention of the Book, the Qur’an or revelation, and the other four are also linked to a sign or a miracle.
| Letters | How it is recited | Surahs |
|---|---|---|
| الم | Alif Lām Mīm | 2, 3, 29, 30, 31, 32 (6) |
| المص | Alif Lām Mīm Ṣād | 7 (1) |
| الر | Alif Lām Rā | 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 (5) |
| المر | Alif Lām Mīm Rā | 13 (1) |
| كهيعص | Kāf Hā Yā ʿAyn Ṣād | 19 (1) |
| طه | Ṭā Hā | 20 (1) |
| طسم | Ṭā Sīn Mīm | 26, 28 (2) |
| طس | Ṭā Sīn | 27 (1) |
| يس | Yā Sīn | 36 (1) |
| ص | Ṣād | 38 (1) |
| حم | Ḥā Mīm | 40, 41, 43, 44, 45, 46 (6) |
| حم عسق | Ḥā Mīm, ʿAyn Sīn Qāf | 42 (1) |
| ق | Qāf | 50 (1) |
| ن | Nūn | 68 (1) |
The seven «Ḥā Mīm» surahs (40–46) come in a row and are called «al-Ḥawāmīm»; each is followed by mention of the Book or its revelation. «Alif Lām Mīm» opens six surahs, and «Alif Lām Rā» five consecutive ones (10–15, with «Alif Lām Mīm Rā» in 13). Ash-Shura (42) has letters in two ayaat: «Ḥā Mīm» and «ʿAyn Sīn Qāf».
| Surah | Opening | Link to a miracle or revelation |
|---|---|---|
| 25 surahs | the Book / the Qur’an / revelation | the Qur’an itself, made of these same letters (iʿjāz) |
| 30, Ar-Rum | the Romans’ defeat | a fulfilled prophecy, proof of revelation |
| 19, Maryam | the births of Yahya and ’Isa | miracles of Allah’s power, leading to “He gave me the Book” (19:30) |
| 68, Al-Qalam | the pen and writing | the unlettered Prophet ﷺ and the written revelation |
| 29, Al-’Ankabut | the testing of believers | the Book as the sign, from an unlettered Prophet ﷺ (29:48–51) |
So all 29 openings point to the truth of revelation or to a sign of Allah; only in Al-’Ankabut does the link come later in the surah rather than in the opening. This surah-by-surah reading of the four is based on the commentators’ explanations; classical scholars generally linked the letters to the Qur’an’s challenge as a whole, not surah by surah.

«Dhikr» is itself a name of revelation, and the surah at once begins a chain of miracles: Yahya born to the elderly Zakariyya (“it is easy for Me”, 19:9), ’Isa born without a father (19:20–21), and his words from the cradle: “He has given me the Book” (19:30).

And is it not enough for them that we have sent down to thee the Book which is rehearsed to them? Verily, in it is Mercy and a Reminder to those who believe
It opens with the testing of believers, but the surah’s central argument comes later: the Prophet ﷺ neither read nor wrote before this (29:48); and when miracles were demanded, the answer was: is it not enough for them that We sent down the Book to you? (29:51). Here the Book itself is the miracle.

Further ayaat
An oath by the pen and writing, the instrument of the Book; then at once a defence of the Prophet ﷺ against the charge of madness, made precisely because of the revelation. The pen defends one who was himself unlettered yet brought a Book; the first revelation also praised Allah “who taught by the pen” (96:4).
Many Companions and early scholars held that these are among the ambiguous verses whose real meaning Allah alone knows; we believe in them as they are.
According to al-Zamakhshari, Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn Kathir and others, they show that the Qur’an is made of the very letters you speak, yet you cannot produce its like; that is why the Book is usually mentioned right after them, as the link on this page shows.
Some say they are names of the surahs (such as «Ṭā Hā», «Yā Sīn», «Ṣād», «Qāf»); others that their unusual sound arrested the listeners’ attention.
Some sayings attributed to Ibn ʿAbbas treat them as hints of divine names (e.g. «Alif Lām Mīm»: anā llāhu aʿlam), but the chains of these reports are questioned. Modern numerical theories (such as “code 19”) have not been accepted by most scholars.
